Poetry
The Solitary Reaper
William Wordsworth
By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide
Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here, or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
And sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! for the Vale profound
Is overflowing with the sound.
No Nightingale did ever chaunt
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travellers in some shady haunt,
Among Arabian sands:
A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
Breaking the silence of the seas
Among the farthest Hebrides.
Will no one tell me what she sings?--
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Familiar matter of to-day?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
That has been, and may be again?
Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o'er the sickle bending;--
I listened, motionless and still;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN
(Price)
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one
My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
------ organ solo ------
Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

If it is helpful, you may use the affirmations—"I am" on the in-breath and "calm and relaxed" on the out-breath—to center yourself during this practice.
Bring your awareness to your heart. Allow your breaths to massage this area. Notice any specific feelings or thoughts you may have about yourself, people you know, or any particular event. Cultivate a detached and nonjudgmental attitude to anything that comes up for you.
Poetry
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
HIM: I got you to walk with me
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe

Yoga

Dhyana
This meditation will take anywhere from five to 20 minutes. Steps 1 and 2 for one to two minutes each; in Step 3 for three to five minutes; and in Step 4 for five to 15 minutes.
Step by Step
Get into a comfortable, seated position, either in a chair with your legs uncrossed, or on the floor. Adjust your posture so that your spine is upright, yet your body feels relaxed. Rest your hands in your lap or on your thighs, with the palms facing up or down.
Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. Take a few conscious and deep abdominal breaths. Let your exhalations carry out any tension or anxiety you're feeling now, and use them throughout your meditation to expel any tension or anxiety that comes up.
Continue to focus on the heart area while doing the following:
- Cultivate a friendly and accepting attitude toward yourself and your friends.
- Develop feelings of compassion and understanding for all those who suffer.
- Be joyful in your thoughts about a particular person who's important to you or a saint or guru you hold in high esteem.
- Maintain feelings of indifference and equanimity to anyone who has harmed you or anyone else. Don't get sucked into their mean-spiritedness or harmful deeds.

The Onset by Robert Frost
By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide
Always the same, when on a fated night
At last the gathered snow lets down as white
As may be in dark woods, and with a song
It shall not make again all winter long
Of hissing on the yet uncovered ground,
I almost stumble looking up and round,
As one who overtaken by the end
Gives up his errand, and lets death descend
Upon him where he is, with nothing done
To evil, no important triumph won,
More than if life had never been begun.
The earth but it has failed: the snow may heap
In long storms an undrifted four feet deep
As measured again maple, birch, and oak,
It cannot check the peeper's silver croak;
And I shall see the snow all go down hill
In water of a slender April rill
That flashes tail through last year's withered brake
And dead weeds, like a disappearing snake.
Nothing will be left white but here a birch,
And there a clup of houses with a church.
-Words and Music by Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman, and J. Feldman
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....they fell in love
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....she lost her love
(Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana)
(Talking Havana have a banana)
(Music and passion...always the fash--shun)
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....don't fall in love
Copacabana

- Helps to stimulate the abdominal organs, diaphragm and the heart, helps proper digestion and immune system.
- Strengthens gluteal, thigh, abdominal and back muscles. Strengthens the ankles and feet, while stretching the calve muscles.
- Cautions include recent chronic injury to hip, injury to the knees, chronic headaches, insomnia should avoid this posture.
- In Tadasana or Mountain pose, find equal weight on all corners of the feet. Inhale to bring the arms up overhead, moving the upper arm-bones up and back.
- Turn the palms to face each other, or place the palms in prayer. Exhale to bend the knees as though sitting in a chair.
- Track the knees over the toes and in line with the hips. Maintain a neutral spine by dropping the tailbone down and drawing the pubic bone towards the navel. The torso will be perpendicular to the thighs.
- Stay for 5 deep breaths.
- To come back to standing, inhale to straighten the legs and exhale to release the arms to the side of the body. Counter poses include Tadasana and Uttanasana.
The Onset by Robert Frost
By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide
Always the same, when on a fated night
At last the gathered snow lets down as white
As may be in dark woods, and with a song
It shall not make again all winter long
Of hissing on the yet uncovered ground,
I almost stumble looking up and round,
As one who overtaken by the end
Gives up his errand, and lets death descend
Upon him where he is, with nothing done
To evil, no important triumph won,
More than if life had never been begun.
Yet all the precedent is on my side:
I know that winter death has never triedThe earth but it has failed: the snow may heap
In long storms an undrifted four feet deep
As measured again maple, birch, and oak,
It cannot check the peeper's silver croak;
And I shall see the snow all go down hill
In water of a slender April rill
That flashes tail through last year's withered brake
And dead weeds, like a disappearing snake.
Nothing will be left white but here a birch,
And there a clup of houses with a church.

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to thereShe would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)
The hottest spot north of Havana (here)At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....they fell in love
(Copa Copacabana)
His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancin' thereAnd when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?
At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)

Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....she lost her love

(Music and passion...always the fash--shun)
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a showNow it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!

Kukkutasana (Cockerel Pose)
- Strengthens the arm and shoulder muscles, gives sensation of levitation.
- Sit in padmasana
- Insert the right arm between the right thigh and calf muscle, and the left arm between the left thigh and the calf muscle.
- Place the palms of the hands firmly on the ground with the fingers pointing forward.
- Balance the weight of the body on the hands and raise the body off the ground. The arms and wrists will have to be strong to support the body. Inhale slowly as you raise the body.
- Hold the breath in the final position or breathe normally.
- Remain in the final pose for as long as is comfortable, keeping the head straight and the eyes fixed on a point in front.
- Exhale while lowering the body to the ground.
Poetry
In every way you may please yourself;
But please please me in the kitchen chimney:
Don't build me a chimney upon a shelf.
However far you must go for bricks,
Whatever they cost a-piece or a pound,
Buy me enough for a full-length chimney,
And build the chimney clear from the ground.
It's not that I'm greatly afraid of fire,
But I never heard of a house that throve
(And I know of one that didn't thrive)
Where the chimney started above the stove.
And I dread the ominous stain of tar
That there always is on the papered walls,
And the smell of fire drowned in rain
That there always is when the chimney's false.
A shelf's for a clock or vase or picture,
But I don't see why it should have to bear
A chimney that only would serve to remind me
Of castles I used to build in air.

Beautiful Day
But there's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere.
You thought you’d found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace
It's a beautiful day,
the sky falls And you feel like
it's a beautiful day,
Don’t let it get away
You’re on the road but you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if that doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over and it’s been all over you
It's a beautiful day,
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day,
Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me love, I know I’m not a hopeless case
See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out
It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
A beautiful day
Touch me, take me to that other place
Reach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
You don’t need it now

Colours seen by candlelight,

Love me sounded like a jest,
Fit for Yes or fit for No.
No man on your face shall see
Any grief for change on mine.
Wooer light makes fickle troth--
Scorn of me recoils on you.
Bravely, as for life and death--
With a loyal gravity.
Guard her, by your truthful words,
Pure from courtship's flatteries.
And her Yes, once said to you,
SHALL be Yes for evermore.

Looking forward to happier times

And the world is mine
On Blue Bayou

With their sails afloat
If I could only see

Through sleepy eyes
How happy I'd be
Maybe I'll feel better again
On Blue Bayou
Looking forward to happier times

With their sails afloat
If I could only see

Gonna take away
This hurting inside
Well I'll never be blue

The Lady's Yes
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide
"Yes," I answered you last night;
"No," this morning, Sir, I say.Colours seen by candlelight,
Will not look the same by day.
When the violins played their best,
Lamps above, and laughs below--Love me sounded like a jest,
Fit for Yes or fit for No.
Call me false, or call me free--
Vow, whatever light may shine,No man on your face shall see
Any grief for change on mine.
Yet the sin is on us both--
Time to dance is not to woo--Wooer light makes fickle troth--
Scorn of me recoils on you.
Learn to win a lady's faith
Nobly, as the thing is high;Bravely, as for life and death--
With a loyal gravity.
Lead her from the festive boards,
Point her to the starry skies,Guard her, by your truthful words,
Pure from courtship's flatteries.
By your truth she shall be true--
Ever true, as wives of yore--And her Yes, once said to you,
SHALL be Yes for evermore.
