I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The Parts of a Song

By Espie Estrella, About.com Guide

Song Title:

The title of the song is very important; think of yourself as a salesperson who needs to pitch a product and the title as the name of that product. You would want your title to be memorable and fitting to the theme of the song. You should also highlight your title by placing it within the lyrics of the song.

Title Placement:

In the AAA song form, titles are placed either at the beginning or end of each verse. In the AABA, the title usually appears at the beginning or end of the A section. In the verse/chorus and verse/chorus/bridge song, the title often begins or ends the chorus.

Verse:
The verse is the part of the song that tells a story. Again think of yourself as a salesperson, you would need to use the proper words to convey information about your product in order to sell it. The verse functions the same way; it gives listeners more insight leading to the main message of the song and it moves the story forward. A song may have a number of verses, depending on the form, consisting of several lines each.

Refrain:
A refrain is a line (also can be the title) that is repeated at the end of every verse. Let's take our example for the AAA song form: at the end of each verse of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" the line (which also happens to be the title) "Like a bridge over troubled water" is repeated. The refrain is different from the chorus.

Chorus:
The chorus is the part of the song that often sticks to the mind of a listener because it contrasts with the verse and is repeated several times. The main theme is expressed in the chorus; the title of the song is usually included in the chorus too. Coming back to our salesperson analogy, think of the chorus as the slogan, the words that effectively summarizes why consumers should buy your product.

Differences Between Refrain and Chorus:

There is some confusion as to the function of the refrain and chorus. Although both have lines that are repeated and may contain the title, the refrain and chorus vary in length. The refrain is shorter than the chorus; often the refrain is composed of 2 lines while the chorus can be made up of several lines. The chorus is also melodically, rhythmically and lyrically different from the verse and expresses the main message of the song.

Pre-Chorus:
Also known as the "climb," this part of the song differs melodically and lyrically from the verse and comes before the chorus. The reason why it's called a climb is because it heightens the anticipation of the listeners for the coming climax which is the chorus. An example of a song with a climb is "If Ever You're In My Arms Again" by Peabo Bryson

Climb:
We had a once in a lifetime
But I just couldn't see
Until it was gone
A second once in a lifetime
May be too much to ask
But I swear from now on

Bridge (AABA):

In the AABA song form, the bridge (B) is musically and lyrically different than the A sections. In this form, the bridge gives the song contrast before transitioning to the final A section, therefore it is a necessary part of the song.

Bridge (Verse/Chorus/Bridge):
In the verse/chorus/bridge song form however, the bridge functions differently. It is shorter than the verse and should offer a reason why the final chorus needs to be repeated. It also differs melodically, lyrically and rhythmically from the verse and chorus. In the song "Just Once" recorded by James Ingram, the bridge part begins with the line "Just once I want to understand..."

Coda:
Coda is an Italian word for "tail," it is the additional lines of a song which brings it to a close. The coda is an optional addition to a song.

Poetry

A Psalm of Life

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou are, to dust thou returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act, - act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sand of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

Crystal Healing

Pendulums are an ancient tool used in healing that taps into the “higher consciousness” of the mind. Before using, establish “yes” and “no” direction. Pendulums are used in Crystal Healing sessions to see what “state” the Chakra energy centres are in and what blockages might exist. Pendulums can also be used when establishing which crystals or aromatherapy treatment to use.

Pendulums serve a twofold purpose, as they are registering the energy levels they also repair at the same time and should be used several times during a healing session to monitor the effectiveness of the crystal treatments being used.

The British Society of Dowsers (www.britishdowsers.org.uk) publishes information on dowsing, provides workshops on the subject and has an online shop for the purchase of pendulums, dowsing equipment and books on related subjects. One such book is The Definitive Wee Book on Dowsing by Hamish Miller.

Herbalism

Herbal teas are an excellent way to take herbs internally as well as for external use.

Eczema Relief Tea

Red Clover, Chickweed, Brew for 15 minutes, strained, put in bath, can also be drunk x 3 a day, ¼ dose for children under 6, ½ dose for children ages 6-12 for internal doses.

Bronchial Congestion Tea

1 ½ oz Aniseed
1 oz Calendula flowers
3/4 oz Marshmallow root
1/3 oz Licorice root

Crush aniseeds and add to herbs. Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 tsp mixture; cover & steep 10 minutes.

Less Stress Tea

Relieves stress, relaxes low back and neck areas.

1 part chamomile
1 part mint
1 part calendula flowers

Place all herbs in a tea ball or bag, put in your nicest or most favorite cup or mug, and cover with boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes. Remove tea ball or bag, and add sugar, honey, sweetener, milk, cream or whatever, to taste.

Yoga

Mental benefits of meditation: new patterns of thinking come to the surface as we see a new view of the universe, a vision of unity, happiness, harmony and inner peace, negative habits disappear and the mind becomes more stable.

Meditation changes the vibratory make-up of both the body and the mind and can prevent or minimize senility.

When meditating, concentrate on a certain mantra to help still the mind and to focus it on something positive.

Poetry

The Road Not Taken

Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Poetry

I Cannot Live With You

Emily Dickinson

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

I cannot live with you,
It would be life,
And life is over there
Behind the shelf

The sexton keeps the key to,
Putting up Our life,
his porcelain,
Like a cup

Discarded of the housewife,
Quaint or broken;
A newer Sevres pleases,
Old ones crack.

I could not die with you,
For one must wait
To shut the other's gaze down,
You could not.

And I, could I stand by
And see you freeze,
Without my right of frost,
Death's privilege?

Nor could I rise with you,
Because your face
Would put out Jesus'.
That new grace

Glow plain and foreign
On my homesick eye,
Except that you,
than he Shone closer by.

They'd judge us - how?
For you served Heaven, you know
Or sought to;
I could not,

Because you saturated sight,
And I had no more eyes
For sordid excellence
As Paradise.

And were you lost, I would be,
Though my name
Rang loudest
On the heavenly fame.

And were you saved,
And I condemned to be
Where you were not,
That self were hell to me.

So we must keep apart,
You there, I here,
With just the door ajar
That oceans are,
And prayer,
And that pale sustenance,
Despair!

Song for Mardi Gras

Jolie Blonde

Pretty blonde, look at what you've done
You left me to go
To go with another than me
What hope and what future can I have?

Pretty blonde, you left me all alone
To go back to your family
If you hadn't listened to the advice of the others
You'd be here with me today.

Pretty blonde, you thought you were the only one
You're not the only one in the world for me to love
I will find another pretty blonde
God knows, that I love so much.

Pretty blonde, to die would be nothing
It's just staying in the ground for a long time
I don't know what I'll do if you don't come back, baby
Come back to me in Louisiana.

JOLIE BLONDE

Traditional

Jolie Blonde, 'gardez donc, quoi t'as fait
Tu m'as quitte' pour t'en aller
Pour t'en aller avec un autre, oui, que moi
Quel espoir et quel av'nir mais moi je peux avoir?

Jolie blonde, tu m'as laisse' moi tout seul

Bon Dieu sait, moi, j'aime tant.

Jolie blonde, mourir, ca serait pas rien
C'est de rester dans la terre aussi longtemps
Moi j'vois pas quoi faire si tu reviens pas, be'be'
T'en revenir avec moi dans la Louisiane.

Poetry

Annabel Lee

Edgar Allan Poe (About.com Guide)

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we
Of many far wiser than we
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling - my darling - my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

The triolet is a very brief, tightly rhymed poem takes part of its structure from the repetition of entire lines. A triolet is eight lines, as follows:

8th line B (entire 2nd line repeated)

Each line is usually iambic tetrameter, but modern poets have varied the line length and often make subtle changes in the repeated lines, whose meanings evolve as a reader moves through the poem.

Triolets were originally written in the French of the Middle Ages. The first triolets in English were prayers written by Patrick Carey, a Benedictine monk of the 17th century. Robert Bridges, an English poet and critic who later was named Poet Laureate and saw to the publication of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poems, reintroduced the triolet into English at the end of the 19th century. Since its brief vogue back then, only a few poets have written triolets—most contemporary poets shy away from its extreme repetition and limited rhymes.

Example of triolet

How Great My Grief

Thomas Hardy (1901)

How great my grief, my joys how few,
Since first it was my fate to know thee!—
Have the slow years not brought to view
How great my grief, my joys how few,
Nor memory shaped old times anew,
Nor loving-kindness helped to show thee
How great my grief, my joys how few,
Since first it was my fate to know thee?

Acquainted With the Night

Robert Frost

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

Poetry

Old and New Year Ditties

Christina Rossetti (1862)

1
New Year met me somewhat sad:
Old Year leaves me tired,
Stripped of favourite things I had
Baulked of much desired:
Yet farther on my road to-dayGod willing,
farther on my way.

New Year coming on apace
What have you to give me?
Bring you scathe, or bring you grace,
Face me with an honest face;
You shall not deceive me:
Be it good or ill, be it what you will,
It needs shall help me on my road,
My rugged way to heaven, please God.

2
Watch with me, men, women, and children dear,
You whom I love, for whom I hope and fear,
Watch with me this last vigil of the year.
Some hug their business, some their pleasure-scheme;
Some seize the vacant hour to sleep or dream;
Heart locked in heart some kneel and watch apart.

Watch with me blessèd spirits, who delight
All through the holy night to walk in white,
Or take your ease after the long-drawn fight.
I know not if they watch with me: I know
They count this eve of resurrection slow,
And cry, “How long?” with urgent utterance strong.

Watch with me Jesus, in my loneliness:
Though others say me nay, yet say Thou yes;
Though others pass me by, stop Thou to bless.Yea,
Thou dost stop with me this vigil night;
To-night of pain, to-morrow of delight:
I, Love, am Thine; Thou, Lord my God, art mine.

3

Passing away, saith the World, passing away:
Chances, beauty and youth sapped day by day:
Thy life never continueth in one stay.
Is the eye waxen dim, is the dark hair changing to grey
That hath won neither laurel nor bay?
I shall clothe myself in Spring and bud in May:
Thou, root-stricken, shalt not rebuild thy decay
On my bosom for aye.Then I answered: Yea.

Passing away, saith my Soul, passing away:
With its burden of fear and hope, of labour and play;
Hearken what the past doth witness and say:
Rust in thy gold, a moth is in thine array,
A canker is in thy bud, thy leaf must decay.
At midnight, at cockcrow, at morning, one certain day
Lo, the Bridegroom shall come and shall not delay:
Watch thou and pray.Then I answered: Yea.

Passing away, saith my God, passing away:
Winter passeth after the long delay:
New grapes on the vine, new figs on the tender spray,
Turtle calleth turtle in Heaven’s May.
Though I tarry wait for Me, trust Me, watch and pray:
Arise, come away, night is past and lo it is day,
My love, My sister, My spouse, thou shalt hear Me say.
Then I answered: Yea.

Music

Folk Music (taken from article from about.com:folkmusic)

Scarborough Fair" (purchase/download), popularized in America by Simon and Garfunkel, is an English folk song about a trade fair that took place in the resort town of Scarborough during the medieval times. The fair peaked in the late 14th century, but continued to operate until the end of the 1700s.

"Scarborough Fair" Lyrics

The lyrics for "Scarborough Fair" talk about unrequited love. A young man requests impossible tasks from his lover, saying that if she can perform them, he will take her back. In return, she requests impossible things of him, saying she will perform her tasks when he performs his.
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

The use of the herbs "parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme," has been debated and discussed. Herbalists will tell you of the many symbolisms and functions of herbs in healing and health maintenance. There's also a possibility that these meanings were intended as the song evolved (parsley to remove bitterness, sage to cleanse, thyme for courage, rosemary for love). There's some speculation that these four herbs were used in a tonic of some sort, to remove curses.
Simon and Garfunkel's Version

Paul Simon learned the song in 1965 while visiting Martin Carthy in London. Art Garfunkel adapted the arrangement, integrating elements of another song Paul Simon had written called "The Side of a Hill," and the pair added some anti-war lyrics. They recorded the song and didn't give credit to the traditional arrangement and lyrics.”
