Namaste means "the divinity within me salutes the divinity within you."

Child's Pose (Balasana)

Benefits:
  • Gently stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles
  • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and fatigue
  • Relieves back and neck pain when done with head and torso supported
  • If you have difficulty sitting on your heels in this pose, place a thickly folded blanket between your back thighs and calves.

  1. Kneel on the floor. Touch your big toes together and sit on your heels, then separate your knees about as wide as your hips.
  2. Exhale and lay your torso down between your thighs. Broaden your sacrum across the back of your pelvis and narrow your hip points toward the navel, so that they nestle down onto the inner thighs. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of the pelvis while you lift the base of your skull away from the back of your neck.
  3. Lay your hands on the floor alongside your torso, palms up, and release the fronts of your shoulders toward the floor. Feel how the weight of the front shoulders pulls the shoulder blades wide across your back.
  4. Balasana is a resting pose. Stay anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Beginners can also use Balasana to get a taste of a deep forward bend, where the torso rests on the thighs. Stay in the pose from 1 to 3 minutes. To come up, first lengthen the front torso, and then with an inhalation lift from the tailbone as it presses down and into the pelvis.

Poetry

Tree at My Window

Robert Frost

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

Tree at my window, window tree,

My sash is lowered when night comes on;

But let there never be curtain drawn

Between you and me.

Vague dream-head lifted out of the ground,

And thing next most diffuse to cloud,

Not all your light tongues talking aloud

Could be profound.

But tree, I have seen you taken and tossed,

And if you have seen me when I slept,

You have seen me when I was taken and swept

And all but lost.

That day she put our heads together,

Fate had her imagination about her,

Your head so much concerned with outer,

Mine with inner, weather.

Natasha Bedingfield

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined

I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you

Open up the dirty window

Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance

So close you can almost taste it

Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

Only you can let it in

No one else, no one else

Can speak the words on your lips

Drench yourself in words unspoken

Live your life with arms wide open

Today is where your book begins

The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines

We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you

Open up the dirty window

Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance

So close you can almost taste it

Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

Only you can let it in

No one else, no one else

Poetry

To Daffodils

Robert Herrick

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain'd his noon.

Stay, stay,
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the even-song;
And, having pray'd together, we
Will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die
As your hours do, and dry
Away,
Like to the summer's rain;
Or as the pearls of morning's dew,
Ne'er to be found again.

My Happy Ending
Avril Lavigne

So much for my happy ending
oh oh, oh oh
Oh Oh, Ohhh

Let's talk this over
It's not like we're dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something you said?

Don't leave me hangin'
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be

Chorus
You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
How could the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending

Oh Oh,so much for my happy ending Oh Oh
Oh Oh,

You've got your dumb friends
I know what they say
They tell you Im difficult
but so are they
But they don't know me
Do they even know you?
All the things you hide from me
All the shit that you do, (All the shit that you do)
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be

chorus
You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
How could the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending

It's nice to know that you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one
It's nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching as I fall
And letting me know we were done

He was everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
How could the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending.

You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
How could the memories, so close to me, just fade away

Herbalism

"These are the things I know: You always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, plant rosemary at your gate, keep lavender for luck and fall in love whenever possible." ~Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic

Chickweed Herb (Stellaria media)

Anti-rheumatic, vulnerary, emollient. Dosage: Pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 tsp dried herbs, infuse 5 minutes. Drink x 3 a day. Chickweed may be made into an ointment, or used as a poultice. A strong infusion can be made and put into bath water. If being used for children for eczema internally, ¼ dose for children under 6, 1/2 dose for children 6-12.

Namaste means "the divinity within me salutes the divinity within you."

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

Contraditons and cautions:
  • Back injury
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headache
  • Pregnancy
Preparatory Poses

Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
Urdhva Mukha Svanasana
  1. Lie prone on the floor. Stretch your legs back, tops of the feet on the floor. Spread your hands on the floor under your shoulders. Hug the elbows back into your body.
  2. Press the tops of the feet and thighs and the pubis firmly into the floor.
  3. On an inhalation, begin to straighten the arms to lift the chest off the floor, going only to the height at which you can maintain a connection through your pubis to your legs. Press the tailbone toward the pubis and lift the pubis toward the navel. Narrow the hip points. Firm but don't harden the buttocks.
  4. Firm the shoulder blades against the back, puffing the side ribs forward. Lift through the top of the sternum but avoid pushing the front ribs forward, which only hardens the lower back. Distribute the backbend evenly throughout the entire spine.
  5. Hold the pose anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds, breathing easily. Release back to the floor with an exhalation.

Dedication

Robert Louis Stevenson

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

My first gift and my last, to you
I dedicate this fascicle of songs -
The only wealth I have:
Just as they are, to you.

I speak the truth in soberness, and say
I had rather bring a light to your clear eyes,
Had rather hear you praise
This bosomful of songs

Than that the whole, hard world with one consent,
In one continuous chorus of applause
Poured forth for me and mine
The homage of ripe praise.

I write the finis here against my love,
This is my love's last epitaph and tomb.
Here the road forks, and I
Go my way, far from yours.

Escape

You can run, you can hide, but you can't escape my love
You can run, you can hide, but you can't escape my love

Here's how it goes
You and me, up and down
But MAYBE this time we'll get it right
Worth a fight
'Cause love is something you cant SHARE
When it breaks (When it breaks)
All it takes is some tryin'

If you feel like leaving
I'm not gonna BEG YOU TO stay
'Cause soon you'll be finding
You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love
You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love

So, if you go
You should know (you should know)
It's hard to just forget the past
So fast
It was good (it was good)
It was bad but it was real
And that's all you have
In the end our love matters (Oh no no no yeah)

If you feel like leaving
I'm not gonna BEG YOU TO (I won't BEG YOU TO stay)
Cuz soon you'll be finding
You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love
You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love

(You can run, you can run)
(You can hide, you can hide)
But you can't escape my love (my love)

You can run (you can run)
You can hide (you can hide)
But you can't escape my love

Here's how it goes
All it takes is some tryin' (Baby you can run)

If you feel like leavin'
I'm not gonna beg you to stay (I won't beg you to stay)
Cuz soon you'll be finding (you'll be finding)
You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love (Can't escape my love)

 If you feel like leavin'
I'm not gonna beg you to stay (You can't escape my love)
Cuz soon you'll be finding
You can run, you can hide,
But you can't escape my love

You can run

Using Crystals and Yoga Meditation to Detox Stress http://chakrayoga.suite101.com/article.cfm/using-crystals-and-yoga-meditation-to-heal-and-detox-stress

Lunar Crystals

The moon represents emotion and powerful instincts, patterns, ancestral and karmic inheritances. For all moon signs it is recommended to meditate with a bloodstone at the full moon to uncover hidden unfulfilled desires that are controlling your life.  It is possible to reprogram patterns of behavior and facilitate healthy sources of nurturing.

Abalone (Paua shell, Mother of Pearl)

Cheerfulness, security, protection, helps with despair, insecurity, physical uses inflammation of skin, mucous membranes.

Herbalism

These are the things I know: You always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, plant rosemary at your gate, keep lavender for luck and fall in love whenever possible." ~Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic

Celery Seed (Apium graveolens)

Traditional remedy for nervous stomach, diuretic, carminative, mild tranquillizer used to relieve arthritic pain. Caution: Can cause increased risk of sunburn in people who take prescription ACE inhibitors to control high blood pressure.

Yoga

The two forces of mind and prana maintain the rhythm of life and consciousness. Everything in the universe is evolving. Matter in its ultimate form is energy. The goal of yoga is to turn the body into solid energy. – Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Namaste means "the divinity within me salutes the divinity within you."

Bakasana, Crane Pose
  • Strengthens arms and wrists
  • Stretches the upper back
  • Strengthens the abdominal muscles
  • Opens the groins
  • Tones the abdominal organs
Contraindications and Cautions
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  •  Pregnancy
  1. Squat down from Tadasana with your inner feet a few inches apart. If it isn't possible to keep your heels on the floor, support them on a thickly folded blanket. Separate your knees wider than your hips and lean the torso forward, between the inner thighs. Stretch your arms forward, then bend your elbows, place your hands on the floor and the backs of the upper arms against the shins.
  2. Snuggle your inner thighs against the sides of your torso, and your shins into your armpits, and slide the upper arms down as low onto the shins as possible. Lift up onto the balls of your feet and lean forward even more, taking the weight of your torso onto the backs of the upper arms. In Bakasana you consciously attempt to contract your front torso and round your back completely. To help yourself do this, keep your tailbone as close to your heels as possible.
  3. With an exhalation, lean forward even more onto the backs of your upper arms, to the point where the balls of your feet leave the floor. Now your torso and legs are balanced on the backs of your upper arms. As a beginner at this pose, you might want to stop here, perched securely on the bent arms.
  4. But if you are ready to go further, squeeze the legs against the arms, press the inner hands firmly to the floor and (with an inhalation) straighten the elbows. Seen from the side the arms are angled slightly forward relative to the floor. The inner knees should be glued to the outer arms, high up near the armpits. Keep the head in a neutral position with your eyes looking at the floor, or lift the head slightly, without compressing the back of the neck, and look forward.
  5. Stay in the pose anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 minute. To release, exhale and slowly lower your feet to the floor, back into a squat.
Poetry

The Weakest Thing
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

Which is the weakest thing of all
Mine heart can ponder?
The sun, a little cloud can pall
With darkness yonder?
The cloud, a little wind can move
Where'er it listeth?
The wind, a little leaf above,
Though sere, resisteth?

What time that yellow leaf was green,
My days were gladder;
But now, whatever Spring may mean,
I must grow sadder.
Ah me! a leaf with sighs can wring
My lips asunder -
Then is mine heart the weakest thing
Itself can ponder.

Yet, Heart, when sun and cloud are pined
And drop together,
And at a blast, which is not wind,
The forests wither,
Thou, from the darkening deathly curse
To glory breakest, -
The Strongest of the universe
Guarding the weakest!

That Ole Devil Called Love

It's that ole devil called love again
Gets behind me and keeps giving me that shove again
Putting rain in my eyes
tears in my dreams
and rocks in my heart.

It's that sly old son of a gun again
He keeps telling me that I'm the lucky one again
But I still have that rain
still have those tears
And those rocks in my heart.

S'pose I didn't stay, ran away, wouldn't play
The devil, what a potion he would brew?

He'd follow me around, build me up, tear me down
Till I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do.

Might as well give up that fight again
I know darn well he'll convince me that he's right again.
When he sings that sorry song I'm just gonna tag along
With that ole devil called love.

He'd follow me around, build me up, tear me down
Till I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do.

Might as well give up that fight again
I know darn well he'll convince me that he's right again.
When he sings that sorry song I'm just gonna tag along
With that ole devil called love.
With that ole devil called love.

Happy Baby Pose, Ananda Balasana
  • Gently stretches the inner groins and the back spine
  • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and fatigue
  1. Lie on your back. With an exhale, bend your knees into your belly.
  2. Inhale, grip the outsides of your feet with your hands (if you have difficulty holding the feet directly with your hands, hold onto a belt looped over each sole.) Open your knees slightly wider than your torso, then bring them up toward your armpits.
  3. Position each ankle directly over the knee, so your shins are perpendicular to the floor. Flex through the heels. Gently push your feet up into your hands (or the belts) as you pull your hands down to create a resistance.
  4. Coax the thighs in toward your torso and down toward the floor as you lengthen the spine, release your tail bone toward the floor and lengthen the base of your skull away from the back of your neck.
  5. Hold the pose steadily for 30 seconds to one minute. Then release the feet back to the floor with an exhale and rest for a few breaths.
 Poetry

The Two Trees

William Butler Yeats

By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

Beloved, gaze in thine own heart,
The holy tree is growing there;
From joy the holy branches start,
And all the trembling flowers they bear.
The changing colours of its fruit
Have dowered the stars with metry light;
The surety of its hidden root
Has planted quiet in the night;
The shaking of its leafy head
Has given the waves their melody,
And made my lips and music wed,
Murmuring a wizard song for thee.
There the Joves a circle go,
The flaming circle of our days,
Gyring, spiring to and fro
In those great ignorant leafy ways;
Remembering all that shaken hair
And how the winged sandals dart,
Thine eyes grow full of tender care:
Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
Gaze no more in the bitter glass
The demons, with their subtle guile.
Lift up before us when they pass,
Or only gaze a little while;
For there a fatal image grows
That the stormy night receives,
Roots half hidden under snows,
Broken boughs and blackened leaves.
For ill things turn to barrenness
In the dim glass the demons hold,
The glass of outer weariness,
Made when God slept in times of old.
There, through the broken branches, go
The ravens of unresting thought;
Flying, crying, to and fro,
Cruel claw and hungry throat,
Or else they stand and sniff the wind,
And shake their ragged wings; alas!
Thy tender eyes grow all unkind:
Gaze no more in the bitter glass.

Witchy Woman

Raven hair and ruby lips
Sparks fly from her finger tips
Echoed voices in the night
Shes a restless spirit on an endless flight

Wooo hooo witchy woman, see how
High she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman she got
The moon in her eye

She held me spellbound in the night
Dancing shadows and firelight
Crazy laughter in another
Room and she drove herself to madness
With a silver spoon
Woo hoo witchy woman see how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman she got the moon in her eye

Well I know you want a lover,
Let me tell your brother, she’s been sleeping
In the devil’s bed.
And there’s some rumors going round
Someones underground
She can rock you in the nighttime
til your skin turns red
Woo hoo witchy woman
See how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman
She got the moon in her eye

Poetry

The Solitary Reaper
William Wordsworth
By Simran Khurana, About.com Guide

Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here, or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
And sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! for the Vale profound
Is overflowing with the sound.

No Nightingale did ever chaunt
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travellers in some shady haunt,
Among Arabian sands:
A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
Breaking the silence of the seas
Among the farthest Hebrides.

Will no one tell me what she sings?--
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Familiar matter of to-day?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
That has been, and may be again?

Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o'er the sickle bending;--
I listened, motionless and still;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN
(Price)

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

------ organ solo ------

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Yoga

The two forces of mind and prana maintain the rhythm of life and consciousness. Everything in the universe is evolving. Matter in its ultimate form is energy. The goal of yoga is to turn the body into solid energy. – Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Dhyana

This meditation will take anywhere from five to 20 minutes. Steps 1 and 2 for one to two minutes each; in Step 3 for three to five minutes; and in Step 4 for five to 15 minutes.

Step by Step

Get into a comfortable, seated position, either in a chair with your legs uncrossed, or on the floor. Adjust your posture so that your spine is upright, yet your body feels relaxed. Rest your hands in your lap or on your thighs, with the palms facing up or down.

Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. Take a few conscious and deep abdominal breaths. Let your exhalations carry out any tension or anxiety you're feeling now, and use them throughout your meditation to expel any tension or anxiety that comes up.

If it is helpful, you may use the affirmations—"I am" on the in-breath and "calm and relaxed" on the out-breath—to center yourself during this practice.

Bring your awareness to your heart. Allow your breaths to massage this area. Notice any specific feelings or thoughts you may have about yourself, people you know, or any particular event. Cultivate a detached and nonjudgmental attitude to anything that comes up for you.

Continue to focus on the heart area while doing the following:
  • Cultivate a friendly and accepting attitude toward yourself and your friends.
  • Develop feelings of compassion and understanding for all those who suffer.
  • Be joyful in your thoughts about a particular person who's important to you or a saint or guru you hold in high esteem.
  • Maintain feelings of indifference and equanimity to anyone who has harmed you or anyone else. Don't get sucked into their mean-spiritedness or harmful deeds.
To complete your meditation, take three to five deep abdominal breaths. Open your eyes and slowly get up.

Poetry

A Visit from St. Nicholas

Clement Clark Moore (1822)

’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

I got you babe

HER: They say we're young and we don't know
We won't find out until we grow

HIM: Well I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby I got you

HIM: Babe
BOTH: I got you babe
I got you babe

HER: They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned, our money's all been spent

HIM: I guess that's so, we don't have a pot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got

HIM: Babe
BOTH: I got you babe
I got you babe

HIM: I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring

HER: And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And if I get scared, you're always around

HER: Don't let them say your hair's too long
'Cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong

HIM: Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb

HIM: Babe
BOTH: I got you babe
I got you babe

HIM: I got you to hold my hand

HER: I got you to understand

HIM: I got you to walk with me

HER: I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so

BOTH: I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
